Discover the technology that changed the world! Taught by Thérèse Kearns, resident experimental archaeologist and archaeometallurgist, you’ll learn to use 8,000-year-old tools and techniques to smelt copper from malachite, create a bronze alloy with tin, and cast your own ancient artifact in bronze.

About the workshop

  • One-day workshop, 10am - 3pm with a break for lunch

  • Use a clay furnace, charcoal, and goatskin bellows to smelt copper and cast bronze

  • Discover the story of ancient metalworking from its invention to its rediscovery through experimental archaeology

  • No experience necessary!

  • Set in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings

Please note that the casting process is temperamental, and we cannot guarantee you will create an item to take home.

Included in your ticket

Entrance to the farm, a full day’s tuition and expertise from our experimental archaeologist, and all the tools and materials necessary to authentically smelt copper and create and cast bronze.
