Corn Dolly Workshop

  • Butser Ancient Farm Chalton Lane Hampshire, PO8 0BG United Kingdom (map)

Celebrate the full harvest moon by making tokens from the harvest. Learn an endangered craft deeply rooted to rural life, from one of the last remaining tutors in the South of England. Plait straw to create a range of corn dollies while you listen to their history. A soothing and relaxing activity, this workshop is beginner friendly.

About the workshop

  • 10am - 3pm with a break for lunch

  • Engage with an endangered craft that harks back to ancient times

  • Try out several different weaves before making a few designs such as swooping swallow, horseshoes, lanterns or hearts

  • Learn the history of corn dollies as you weave

  • Set in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings

In the workshop you will learn several basic weaves to get the feel of working with the straw, then you can make a few different pieces. As you weave, hear about the history of corn dollies. By the end of the session you will have at least two or three finished corn dollies to take home. Decorations such as ribbons and charms will be provided for each piece.

Sally Murdoch loves the craft for its relaxing properties. She teaches corn dolly making at several historic sites and events, and makes commissioned pieces. She’s a knowledgeable and patient teacher.
