SOLD OUT - Tree Ornament Workshop

  • Butser Ancient Farm Chalton Lane Hampshire, PO8 0BG United Kingdom (map)

Connect with an endangered craft deeply rooted to rural life, from one of the last remaining tutors in the South of England. Learn to plait straw to create a range of corn dollies for your festive tree or as lovely gifts. A soothing and relaxing activity, this workshop offers a calming escape from the bustle of modern Christmas, and is beginner friendly. Running on both days.

About the workshop

  • 10am - 1pm, and time to explore the site

  • Engage with an endangered craft that harks back to ancient times

  • Try out a range of weaves, and learn to make glory braids, festive tokens, dragonflies, hearts, or lantern pomanders with scented Saxon amulet beads

  • Set in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings

Sally Murdoch loves the craft for its relaxing properties. She teaches corn dolly making at several historic sites and events, and makes commissioned pieces. She’s a knowledgeable and patient teacher.

In the workshop you will learn several basic weaves to get the feel of working with the straw, then you can make a few different pieces. As you weave, hear about the history of corn dollies. By the end of the session you will have at least two or three finished corn dollies to take home. Decorations such as coloured ribbons and charms will be provided for each piece.
